I used to dread every January.
Not because Christmas was over, or because it was often the coldest time of year or even due to holiday vacation ending.
No, I dreaded January because in the life cycle of a publicly traded company, that’s when everything happened at once for someone in my communications role.
The company reported quarterly and annual earnings on the last Thursday of the month. That meant a lengthy and detailed press release and a script for the investor conference call, both my responsibility (with lots of teamwork, especially with our IR director, but I was the “neck to choke”). That required time with multiple senior corporate executives to hear their perspectives and data (which didn’t always align), and then alone time in the cube to define messages for their review.
