My Writing Origin Story (Alas, No Radioactive Spiders)

When I was 12 years old, I wrote a letter to the head coach of the (then) Washington Redskins.

I don’t remember what I wrote, but I wasn’t happy. I know this because Coach George Allen wrote me back - in November, no less.

“This has been a frustrating season,” he conceded in his letter, after noting he appreciates all feedback, good, bad and indifferent. “I want you to know we are continually trying to do everything possible to give you a better football team,” he added. [Note: He also said he thought the team would still make the playoffs, and he was right. The 1976 Redskins finished 10-4 and lost to the Vikings in the divisional round.]

If you’re fortunate, you find something to do for a living that you really enjoy. My career has revolved around writing. And my writing origin story began with letters.
